I guess you are not use to the culture, but it is not all about the violence. You see you should go back to the beginning of the hip hop era in the late 1970 to see what it means. At that time it was something that the kids in the ghetto like me trying to express themselves through break dancing,DJ-ing, graffiti and spitting rhymes because some people don't understand the struggle with poverty and t.v. never like to play our kind of music on air except rock and roll. Plus it was one of those options that is still going on today so poor kids can get out of a bad sitution instead of killing each other.Today the media just make it look bad because they don't understand it or it got to commercial/world-wide, but we just doing it in a different way today. Before you judge it as a bunch of noise and a waste of time, you should do your reseach starting in the late 70's like'77,'78'79.

You should rent "Beat Street" , "Krush Groove"and "Breakin' " these 3 movies have all you need to know about hip-hop. They have the clothes, culture and the founding fathers of hip-hop.

It's way more than that. Hip-Hop started in the 70's. Begin your research there. It's about not fitting in and not caring. It's about making your own rules. The violent and dirty image that you have comes from the gangsta rappers of the early '90's. Make sure you check out Funk Masta Flex, Run DMC, DJ Jazzy Jay, The Beastie Boys, Wu-Tang Clan, Heiroglyphics and Blackalicious just to name a few. Feel free to PM me if you want more suggestions.

a lot of hip-hip is like that, but there is some of it that refers to the artist life, so I say it depends on what the artist want to do with it.

oh please all of you need a little education, it is so much more than that. You need to dig deeper to get into the roots of hip hop / rap to understand what its all about.
It was never about the crap it has transformed into.

Rap was about telling a story and educating each other, it was about having a good time and celebrating individuality.

It wasn't about calling women hoes, guys nig**rs, and bringing anybody down.

It has been castrated and mutated into a social and economic form of pop music. In the beginning it was designed to lift the spirits and moral of people in the neighborhood now it has turned into a way to suppress them.

What you categorize, today, as rap is nothing more than twisted pop music crap.

If you do this project, I hope you uncover the true meaning of rap and dig deep to uncover its true virtue. I really hope you do and maybe can make someone understand.
